documenta (13)

The documenta is the world’s most important series of exhibitions of contemporary art. It takes place every five years in Kassel and lasts 100 days. The first documenta was held in 1955 and was initiated by Arnold Bode. The documenta (13) begins on 9 June 2012 and is also known as the Museum of 100 Days.

Competition
A temporary “centre of information and communication” is to be created in Kassel’s city centre during the documenta, a spatial hybrid that is to house various functions within itself during the 100-day event. Another part of the task is to present smaller satellites in exemplary form that can be arranged in a distributed manner at key strategic points in the city.

Design
For the documenta (13), an extraordinary building and eye-catcher was to be created. The future of mankind and its past, each of which is a central theme of our everyday lives, are placed in direct relation to each other by having a futuristic structure land on the historic Fridicianum.

Layout
With its unusual shape and far-visible location, the spaceship catches the eye of every visitor and arouses curiosity. And once the guest has been drawn into the spell, he or she will be drawn in by the spaceship and want to see it from the inside.
