Musical Center Cologne

Away with it! Every era follows a self-evident basic attitude to building. After the war, in the mainstream of the economic miracle, once the rubble had been cleared, further demolition for a modern, transport-oriented city was considered a tacit agreement.

In the meantime, the pendulum has long since swung in another direction. Conversion, preservation and reconstruction, all the way to a contemplative return to small-scale structures in the historic centres of cities, are considered in many places to be the watchwords of the present. On the other hand, demolition is also part of sustainable urban development. For only in this way can urban planning and architectural mistakes be revised.

The object of choice is the Musical Centre at Cologne’s main railway station. The current building, designed for temporary use, is to be unabashedly demolished and make way for a new, better landmark for the city of Cologne.
For this purpose, a building is designed that creates references to the outside space through the glazed entrance foyer on the fourth level, thus providing the visitor with a panoramic view of the city.
