Visitors Center Cologne
Cologne is a great tourist destination. An appropriate tourist centre should be designed for this popular excursion and travel destination in the heart of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. This should serve as a transfer point for arriving tourists, directly on the Rhine promenade next to the Hohenzollern Bridge.
During the design process, the immediate proximity to the Ludwig Museum, Cologne Cathedral, Hohenzollern Bridge and the Rhine must be taken into account. An equally limiting factor of the genius loci are the tunnels running under the building site, which have to be taken into account when laying the foundations of the building to be planned.
The design has enriched the urban space at this location with a valuable meeting place that creates special atmospheres in the urban space through light and shadow. When visitors reach the upper floor, they are granted targeted views over Cologne to enable a special first impression of the city.
The design was further developed in the construction project for the implementation planning and deepened in the focus areas of building physics, load-bearing structure in building construction and building services engineering. The aim was to record the individual aspects of the building in detail and to comprehensively illustrate their interaction.
In the implementation planning, two plans were compared, one traditional and one experimental.
